I could not import this file either. Something must have been corrupted in its creation when we had some strong winds in my location. The lights here blinked once, but we never lost power in my area. Other sections of Connecticut had power outages during the high wind event, with trees falling on some homes, garages and vehicles.
Anyway, I just re-exported the trees following the directions you gave, then did a test import into a new Scene, and everything imported without any issues. My original export was similar with the directory that contained all trees and their respective textures/materials folders. It should have worked, but again perhaps that power glitch did something to the file and corrupted it.
This this link again.. http://www.jfdhobbies.com/StarflightRema...itypackage
Hope this works.
