I have to rave a bit, and also rant.
I played Starflight II as a little kid in the 80s. My big brother was a better gamer than I was, so mostly what I remember was my sense of awe. My fear when I saw an UHL, and my delight at winning an adorable Dweenle to my crew. I built countless Humna-Humna out of plasticene. I remember the race that had three phases, and having to negotiate with them. I have often said that I learned how to barter from Starflight II - it's served me well when I do work in West Africa among communities where haggling is a must!

Later I found Star Control and Star Control 2, and loved them fiercely. We never did finish Starflight II though - and I always wanted to.

Over and over, as an adult, I'd try to play the game again, and the clunky interface impeded me every time. With the internet, I learned about Starflight I, which we'd never had access to as kids. If SF2 was hard on the eyes, I bemoaned, surely SF1 would be impossible.
I have a 5 year old son now, and he's a Star Control fanatic. He recites the theme songs to every single alien race, and recreates epic starbattles in the bathtub. And I've been wanting SO badly to share the game that started it all for me. But how? The only reason he is so enthralled with SC2 is the Ur-Quan Masters.. if only, I've said for years, someone was doing a GOOD remake of these older games!

And here you are!
And having dubiously downloaded it - it's GORGEOUS!!!!
So thank you.
You've made a middle aged gamer-girl very happy.

Really great that there is a forum started for a new release of Starlight.

Got the old Starflight 1 game installed and started playing it again after years of comparing every other space game to it.
No one ever came close. I still have my original game, Jacket, inserts, code wheel, starmap (edited).

First time into the game was with a buddy, but he was in for a few episodes... but found myself alone in a new, and strange universe..
Had a blast and finished the game. Then played it a few more times...
Nothing compares to going around on a planets surface only to come across some Pyramids and some ancient artifacts!!

Can't wait to play it again...but...
looking forward to something new as well.
I never did play Starflight 2, but i have that as well and will get into that.

Will look to follow any progress with the new project and good to see some other star travelers still around...

What about the original devs? What they did on a couple of floppy disks really inspired me.
Became a programmer: dBase/Clipper then into networks, worked for SMC, then enterprise networks, and ran the network in North America for an International Airline.
Do you think Starflight had anything to do with that? yea, it did.

Just wanted to say thanks for your efforts. You're doing fantastic work.

I was reminiscing with my son about this game (he's 30 now). He was just a baby when I played it but he remembers it and how much I liked it. It may have been one of the first computer games I bought. I started looking for it online to see if anyone still remembered it and found your work. I tried out your latest build and love what you're doing. I'm eager to see the completed version. I've only tried flying around the home solar system, and landing on one planet. I noticed you couldn't mine anything and realized you were still working on game features.

This was one of those games that I liked so much that I could not bring myself around to throwing it away. Even though computers evolved way beyond my original 5 1/4 floppies, I still kept the original PC version. I dug it out of one of my old software boxes and it's all still there. I even have my old poorly organized notes with flux locations, etc. I can't remember exactly why, but I had never completed the game. I think after hours of playing, my saved game was written over by a family member trying it out, and I didn't want to start it all over again. I'd love to play it again now though.

Thanks again. I will be following your work. Any idea of an expected timeframe for completion?

If you've got an idea or something you wish to be put in Marvin's remake post it in here! Obviously there is no guarantee it will happen but hey it never hurts to ask.

Plus some ideas could even become part of a future mod project! Opensource means anyone can fork it in a direction they wish to.

Some dream/wish list items (ranging from simple to crazy lol) I have are:

Dripping green slime in the Spemin comms room.

A few flashing/blinking lights or computer screens on the wall behind the Thrynn.

Different planet cloud colours based on the the planet atmosphere type. DONE!

Genesis remake mod - Eg changing some of the assets to be more in the style of the Genesis remake of SF1 and also adding some of the Genesis remake features not in the original PC version such as a Terrain Vehicle with system upgrades.

Starflight 2 Remake using Marv's one day finished SF1 remake engine.

Starflight 3 Mysteries of the Universe fan sequel remake using Marv's one day finished SF1 remake engine. With an official SF3 on the way it's probably best to take the 3 out of the title. We have a ton of their old assets and story, the project kept failing because they never had a finished engine! Well soon we might just have one lol!

Starflight The Lost Colony remake using Marv's one day finished SF1 remake engine. Now that would be fascinating!

I believe some of these are on Michael/Gamxin's wish list too lol!
